  Safety Aspects

The five (5) components of Safety Aspects, Vision, Space, Decisions, Visibility and Avoidance are to be requested and explained separately. This section is mandatory. The applicant is to give a clear explanation of the following safety aspects:

  • Vision
  • There are three components of driving vision:
    1. Aim High and look well beyond the immediate road surface and surrounding traffic.Depth of vision is essential for safe driving. Aiming high allows you to see the whole scene.
    2. See the whole scene includes all the happenings on or around (vehicles, people, objects, signs, etc.) to the visible end of the roadway. It includes vision to the rear.
    3. Eyes on the move to see the whole scene, from situation to situation, constantly evaluating. You are continually looking for potential trouble

  • Space
  • To drive safely you must keep clear of other vehicles -- to do this you develop a safety cushion. The safety cushion is a clear space maintained right around the vehicle to give reaction, manoeuvring or stopping room in any situation. The safety cushion is variable and alters with speed and traffic conditions. It includes a safe following distance.

  • Decisions
  • Driving decisions are to be made early to allow all actions to be unhurried. You should be a very predictable driver with ample decision time in all situations.

  • Visibility
  • Ensure other drivers are aware of your presence. You must make other drivers aware of your presence by signalling, sounding the horn, flashing the lights, or making eye contact. Never drive where you can't see or be seen.

  • Avoidance
  • Try to avoid dangerous situations. Always try to "have a way out" in any situation. Be prepared for the unexpected

Don't forget to do MISS for any Left or Right turn or any sort of diversion to the right or left at any time. Check Mirror before you slowdown or stop.
